1. Read up thoroughly about your study abroad destination. Try your level best to read and get information regarding the country's general affairs and the city where you will be residing. Pick up a travel book and try to familiarize yourself with the prominent tourist destinations, public transport system, and restaurants of the city where you will be going to study in.
2. Read up on the reviews of your programs, and be sure to go through other blogs that are dedicated to the student experience abroad. By doing this, you will be able to converse with the locals in a better manner, but you will also be able to enhance your own experience with having an awareness of the cultural peculiarities of the country where you will be pursuing your education in.
There is no better time to travel in your life than when you are young, as you have plenty of time in your hands, and you are willing to go that extra mile to save on a few bucks. If you happen to be in Europe than head on over to Germany for attending the Oktoberfest in the fall, go hiking in the Alps during October before the ski crowds and the cold move in, or you can visit the Greek islands if you want to enjoy the Mediterranean climate and cuisine.
3. Find a suitable and efficient way to stay in touch with your family and friends back home. VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is the best and the most cost-effective way of communicating with your friends and family. You can also buy microphones and speakers for your computer if you don't already have them. While studying overseas VOIP options such as Skype and Vonage are extremely affordable, efficient and you can keep in contact with people all over the world as long as you have an internet connection.
4. One of the first things which you will observe while studying abroad is the foreign transaction fees that are levied by your credit card company, on the purchases made in another currency. These extra charges can become quite costly once they add up.
So be sure to set up a local bank account for yourself to avoid the extra charges on your credit card.
In case you don't want to open an international bank account then another idea is to withdraw a large sum of cash in one go. One must also be aware of the fact, that if you don't have a local bank account then a lost credit or debit card can be quite hard to replace.
5. Be prepared to try out different things, as many people who go for study abroad, mostly spend time with their fellow countrymen, which can take away from some of the experience of studying overseas. International students must mentally prepare themselves for coming out of their comfort zones, whether it is taking up their academic courses in the local language, residing in a home stay with a local family, or joining a local sports team. By doing this, not only will they be getting a better idea of the cultural nuances, but they will also be getting a better perspective of the country where you are living in.
6. Try to behave like a local. Remember that you will always be an Indian, but it is worth reading up and appreciating the history of the country and the locals you are living with. Learn to observe the behavioral cues of locals in order to assimilate into the culture and society of the country you are living in a better manner.
7. Learn to take full advantage of student discounts if they are available in your study abroad country. Depending upon the country where you are studying in, student discounts can save you a lot of money in tourist destinations, public transport, shopping outlets, and the movie theaters. Also, it must be kept in mind that many hostels and businesses have special discounts for holders of International Students Card, which you should definitely take advantage of.
