IELTS for UKVI is a UK government-approved SELT, short for Secure English Language Test. With this, IELTS is used to prove the English language proficiency in support of a UK visa and immigration (UKVI) application. For many kinds of visas, candidates have to submit an English language qualification mentioned on the list of Secure English Language Tests by the UK Home Office.

The IELTS tests mentioned below have been approved for UKVI purposes:

IELTS	Academic	This test is for those candidates who aspire to study under-graduate and post-graduate degrees and for those who seek professional registration in the UK.
IELTS	General Training	This test is for those candidates who aspire to migrate to the UK and wants to study as well.
IELTS Life skills A1		This test is for those candidates who have to prove their English speaking and listening skills as a part of UKVI for family for a settled person visa.
IELTS Life skills A2		This test is for those candidates who have to prove their English speaking and listening skills as a part of their UKVI application to family spouse or partner visa.
IELTS Life skills B1		This test is for those candidates who have to prove their English speaking and listening skills as a part of their UKVI application for indefinite leave to remain or citizenship.

IELTS (Academic or General Training)

If you are applying for a tier 1 and 2 visas to the UK, then you need to take the IELTS academic or general training test. IELTS general or academic training for UKVI is designed to meet administrative criteria specified by the UK Home Office. The IELTS for the UK is the same as IELTS in terms of content, examiners, format, and level of difficulty, bands, and more. The only difference is in the report forms. It shows that you have taken the IELTS test at an IELTS UK visa session.

IELTS Life Skills

If you are applying for a ‘family of settled person’ visa or an ‘extension of a family of a settled person’ or for indefinite leave to remain or citizenship,’ then you need to take the IELTS life skills test. It is a new test that is approved by UKVI as a Secure English Language Test. Candidates need to show their English proficiency levels, especially in listening and speaking modules at level A1, A2, or B1.

The cost of the IELTS exam varies per nation. You would need to pay RM 935 for IELTS UKVI and RM 832 for IELTS Life Skills as a student from Malaysia (subject to change without prior notice).
