Program Overview

Dental Technologists (or Dental Technicians as they are often referred to) are highly skilled members of the dental team. This is an ideal degree if you have an eye for detail, in combination with an artistic or scientific background. Graduates work behind the scenes to create and manufacture dentures, crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances in both conventional and digital contexts.

Highlights of studying Dental Technology

  • Combine art and science skills to construct custom-made dental devices to replace, restore and correct defects that may affect facial appearance and the ability to use teeth properly.
  • In your first year, you'll learn foundational skills in health science, be introduced to prosthetics and develop skills in the dental laboratory. Second year applies knowledge of dental materials to dental laboratory practice. Laboratory experience is continued throughout your degree, with an emphasis on work-integrated learning in your third year.
  • Work with industry-standard equipment including computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) in both subtractive (milling) and additive (3D printing) manufacturing facilities. You'll also work with a wide range of materials and techniques such as: gold, porcelain, plastic, lost wax technique and record the colour, shape and characteristics of existing teeth.
  • Study human anatomy in our Anatomy Lab with real specimens to deepen your understanding of dental structures.
  • Expand your practical experience working with experienced Dental Technicians in our commercial laboratory and through professional practice placements.
  • Learn and work alongside dentistry students in our world-class dental clinics and pre-clinical laboratories. Our labs feature 117 state-of-the-art dental chairs, with students assisting in over 6,000 patient appointments annually.
