Program Overview

Become a convergent leader in the new era of digital manufacturing and shape the future of the global manufacturing ecosystem with our creative master's program in manufacturing systems engineering.

Why Earn a Master's in Manufacturing Systems Engineering?

The global manufacturing ecosystem has evolved dramatically in recent decades, driven by forces of technology and globalization and steered by the pursuit of greater efficiencies at scale. A master's in manufacturing systems engineering prepares you to be a lifelong learner and global citizen with a successful career in design, research, improvement or management of systems in manufacturing.

Manufacturing systems engineering program is harnessing the thought leadership required to respond to a highly dynamic environment in which the very definitions and perceptions of manufacturing are rapidly changing.

Future manufacturing will require new advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning; new cyber infrastructure; new approaches for mathematical and computational modeling; new dynamics and control methodologies; new ways to integrate systems biology, synthetic biology and bioprocessing; and new ways to influence the economy, workforce, human behavior and society.

Why Study Manufacturing Systems Engineering at CSUN?

Excellence in Teaching

The evolving curriculum, taught by internationally published faculty, enables students and practicing professionals to pursue a versatile field of study with a wide range of career opportunities. The program places its graduates in the academic community and in every facet of industry.

Cutting-edge Lab Facilities

The MSEM department maintains large research facilities for advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, smart manufacturing, bio-manufacturing, robotics, flexible automation, precision machining, sustainable design and manufacturing, composites/nano-composites manufacturing. Collectively, there are approximately eight distinct laboratories and project spaces, totaling approximately 30,000 square feet available for manufacturing research. For digital design and manufacturing, MSEM has the Laboratory for Additive and Sustainable Manufacturing, the Haas Manufacturing Lab, the Computer-Aided Design Lab and the Boeing Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory. MSEM also has great research capabilities in materials characterization and testing done in the W. M. Keck Advanced Materials Laboratory, Pickett Materials Engineering Laboratory, Corrosion Research Laboratory and the Fracture Mechanics Laboratory.

Diverse Student Community

Classes are enriched by the diverse industry experience and backgrounds of the students. Manufacturing system engineers, designers and others involved in engineering and technology bring their experiences to the classroom.

What You'll Learn

The M.S. program facilitates in-depth knowledge of manufacturing systems based on engineering principles. The core foundation in computer-based and automated design, manufacturing and assembly is complemented by three areas of specialization: advanced manufacturing systems, materials and processes, and quality and management.
