Program Overview

Our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program offers a pathway to teaching for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree but have little or no experience in education. The MAT in Spanish, offered by the Watson College of Education in partnership with UNCW’s College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA), will prepare you to teach Spanish in K-12 schools. The 33-hour program is offered on-campus and online.

Learn from Experienced Faculty and Teachers

Our program has been carefully designed to prepare students to be effective in the professional-world setting. The program consists of a core of professional studies designed to enhance knowledge of Spanish language and culture and promote inquiry into areas that will enhance instructional practices. You will learn from experienced World Language and Education faculty and gain valuable classroom experiences in public schools.

During the final semester, students will participate in full-time student teaching under the guidance of a mentor teacher and faculty supervisor. Successful completion of the program and licensure requirements will lead to a master’s degree and a K-12 North Carolina teaching license in Spanish.
